This haunting and consistently surprising novel raises deep questions about what it means to be alive, but it doesn’t try to console readers with easy or pat answers. ... . A delicate balance between dystopian survival and philosophical grappling means that many different kinds of readers should appreciate the story.—School Library Journal (starred review)Ness brilliantly plays with contrasts: life and death, privacy and exposure, guilt and innocence. In characteristic style, the author of the Chaos Walking trilogy delves into the stuff of nightmares for an existential exploration of the human psyche.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Compulsively readable... It is a very compelling, multidimensional story.—Library Media ConnectionNess’ knack for cliff-hangers, honed in the Chaos Walking series, remains strong, while the spare, gradual, anytime, anyplace quality of the story recalls A Monster Calls... Ness has crafted something stark and uncompromising.—BooklistThis complex, genrebending book opens with Seth’s violent drowning death at sea, described in such spare but devastating detail that readers may feel themselves gasping for a breath as Seth draws his last. ... Ness subverts familiar sci-fi/survival tropes and storytelling conventions, leaving readers with an ambiguous ending... The thematic explorations of the nature of reality and the afterlife offer some heady discussion fodder, while the nail-biting tension and high-stakes action sequences make this an easy sell to the legions of dystopia fans as well.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksNess leads readers on an adventure into a world that astounds and amazes. ...
I'm completely torn about this one. First of all, I adore Patrick Ness. I trust him as a writer and in my book, he makes no mistakes. That said - what the hell happened in this one?I liked Seth, I liked getting glimpses into his life, his family and his friendships. I loved Tomzs and Gudmund. I liked the setup of the novel. The eerie England setting, the story centering around Owen, the last chapter. But I have absolutely no idea what this book was about, what it was supposed to tell me, which message it tried to convey. I have an inkling where Ness was heading, but I'm more confused and uncertain than anything else. Think "Deception" - baffled.I can't even give an adequate review about the plot, because then I'd simultanously reveal too much while saying nothing at all. What I can say is that the book was not what I was expecting when I picked it up. It is a mix between different styles and genres, freqently using flashbacks, dreams and memories as stylistic devices. The book shifts and turns constantly, screwing with your expectations and with your forebodings. It also has some Matrix-Sci-Fi elements which I did not see coming at all.Despite the fact that I don't know how to take this book, I'm still giving it four stars - simply because Ness writes beautifully, creates unique characters with so much heart and courage and because he manages to kepe me interested and on edge for the whole book.
Heard about this on the Radio 2 Book Club. It is nothing like anything else I've ever read. Unfortunately, some of it is too reminiscent of a certain Sci-Fi trilogy, but the characters are brilliantly portrayed and the ending sets your brain churning with questions.
More Than This [Life]" geben muss...
The countless plot twists made my mind swirl. Mr. Ness merged several genres into one great book. Most of the story happens in Seths head. I liked that POV. I loved the diversity of the characters. The story doesn't get boring. It's shrouded in mystery. Everything is foggy and after every page there are more questions arising than answers given, and you just have to press forward, just have to know! I'm gonna buy every book this man writes. New favorite author!
